The Berea Pirate Basketball Team achieved a 72-24 win at a home game against the Danville Christian Academy Warriors on Tuesday, December 4.

The night was ‘Guard Night’ for the Pirates, sponsored by the National Guard. The players wore special edition uniforms complete with camouflage shorts, which were provided by the National Guard. The purpose of Guard Night is to honor current military members, veterans, and first responders. Coach Eric Swords feels that this event is important in order “for the players in our program to show respect to the true heros of our community.”

The National Guard also supplied a ‘Player of the Game’ plaque. At this game, senior Dylan Hanney was awarded this honor, as the top scorer of the game with 12 points. According to Hanney, this accomplishment “feels awesome! I’m one of two players to come off the bench and still win Player of the Game.” Coach Swords commented, “Dylan played well and is capable of playing that way consistently. I am extremely happy for him and hoping that he can continue to provide some scoring for us.”

Coach Swords partly attributes the team’s win to their “length on defense.” The Pirates had 18 steals in this game and “were able to get some easy baskets off of those.” Another contributing factor to the win was that the team “played well and hard,” according to Swords. “We had a flow offensively, which has been a struggle at times for us.” The Pirates and Coach Swords also appreciate their fans. Swords said, “The atmosphere at the home games has been great thus far; we appreciate all the students, staff and community coming out and we hope that will continue to grow.”

The Pirates host the Berea All A Holiday Classic at home on December 19-21. Their next regular season game is a doubleheader with the Lady Pirates at home against Model on January 4, 2019. Come out and support your Pirates!
