On December 15, the Berea Police Department and Berea Community Schools Family Resources/Youth Services Center partnered to bring a very special Christmas to families in the community with their program called “Christmas with a Cop.”

The program aims to provide assistance to families in need by buying the children toys and necessities, as well as foster new relationships with the youth and their parents. Investigations Sergeant Aaron Boycan explained, “Another goal of the program is to provide officers the opportunity to interact in a positive manner with the youth in our community. Being able to engage in this way also helps us foster positive relationships with their parents.”

In the program, the Berea Police Department took needy families to Walmart. To provide the funds for the program, the police department sold shirts for $15 and received donations through December 12. The police department also raised money starting in November by participating in No Shave November. All of the proceeds from the shirt sales and No Shave November went to the Christmas with a Cop program.

Berea Community was chosen for the program due to the fact that the children and families helped all live in Berea. Sergeant Boycan stated, “The need we fulfill though is by conducting the event in Berea so it is closer for our community.”

Overall, the Christmas with a Cop program was successful, and provided positive interactions between police officers and students.
