On October 19, the Pirate football team celebrated their senior night at the Guy Duerson Stadium, against Bishop Brossart.

Before the start of the game, Berea Community recognized both its football and band seniors. The band seniors were Emy Lovell, Tori Williams, Emily Nigro, Ryan Whitt, Cassie Poston, Shane Wilcher, and MacGregor Lakes. Berea Community had four football seniors: Zane Brown, Dylan Hanney, Ben West, and Zack Williams.

The Berea Community Pirates (0-9) fell to Bishop Brossart (6-4) 47 to 12. The Pirates played through the rain and fought hard to come out with two touchdowns. Berea’s Jaylen Whitaker, a junior, scored the team’s first touchdown before halftime. Later, Eric Luppens, also a junior, scored Berea’s second touchdown.

All of the football seniors have been on the team for two years or less, but they were happy to join the Pirates. Zack Williams, a first-year football player, said, “Wanting to break our losing streak and knowing that the team needed help is why I started in the first place.”

The seniors all agreed on one thing: they found a great group of friends and family on the football team. When asked about his favorite part of the season, Zane Brown replied, “getting to grow closer with my team.”

The seniors are also hopeful for the future of the Berea Pirates, as shown by Dylan Hanney’s comment: “Coach Stepp really encouraged me a lot during the season. He truly believes that we will soon be an amazing team.” Ben West’s advice to the younger players is “to keep doing what the coaches are saying and it’ll all come together.”

The Pirates have one last game of their 2018 season to play, which will be at Jellico High School on October 26.
